The Optimists of Pompeii

On Spiritual Awareness and Humility

The Optimists of Pompeii thought the smoke from yonder hill,
Would drift away as usual,
No prospects to fulfil.

In the shade of ornate villa,
Friends sipped and savoured lunch.
Their fate was set.
As ignorance, dispelled the slightest hunch.

In scene of ease and comfort, no fearful thoughts were sown.
No hint.
No premonition,
That soon they would be stone.

A few, in fleeting moment,
Recalled that seer next door.
Whose endless, heartfelt warnings were dismissed.
They felt secure.

Long gone, to live in safety.
With those hidden gifts within.
The prompt …….. to use all senses.
Let intuition in.
It’s the key to being human.
To ensure we stay aware.
To look again, with wisdom and seek depth of spirit care.

The optimists of Pompeii,
Their social whirl complete.
Reclined, content and satisfied.
Their maker for to meet.

Those hidden earthly tensions, beyond all they would know
No thoughts as to eruption and pyroclastic flow.

Perhaps the simplest lesson,
Be at one with all around?
If not, then turn to question,
Let no turbulence confound.

Live far from live volcanoes or the risks of lowly shore,
All places prone to flooding or where mud slides through the door.

Fulfilment as a human,
Stems from peace of mind within.
Draw strength from subtle feeling,
Let the super natural in.
